A uniformed corrections officer was accused of driving while intoxicated after a one-vehicle crash in Romulus, Seneca County, last weekend.
Brian Kampnich, 36, of Watertown, was charged with driving while intoxicated and second-degree obstructing governmental administration, both misdemeanors, in connection with the crash on State Route 96 in Romulus around 10:30 a.m. on Sunday, March 15, according to the Seneca County Sheriff’s Office.
Kampnich is a corrections officer at the Five Points Correctional Facility, a maximum-security prison for men in Romulus, Seneca County, the Sheriff’s Office said in a news release. He was wearing his state-issued uniform at the time of Sunday’s crash.
Deputies said that Kampnich is accused of abandoning a pickup after it was driven into a parked vehicle, a shed, a guardrail and a road sign. According to witnesses at the scene, Kampnich allegedly crashed the pickup then exited the truck and ran into a nearby wooded area.
Deputies set up a perimeter at the scene and located Kampnich, who had ignored several verbal commands from deputies before he was apprehended.
Kampnich refused a breathalyzer test, deputies said. He was issued several traffic tickets He was temporarily detained by Seneca County Sheriff’s Office corrections officers ahead of his arraignment in the county’s CAP court.
