Byram Hills turns heads again, stunning Fox Lane
With Byram Hills having graduated 21 players since reaching the state final two years ago, coach Matty Allen acknowledged, there are few remnants of that championship soccer team.
Maybe a bit of residual aura and some of that winning pedigree remains, though.
Because in what technically is a rebuilding season, and one that has not been without its struggles, the Bobcats still have quietly put together an impressive stretch. And a couple of those performances did speak volumes.
Another reminder of their ability and postseason potential was issued on Sept. 27, when Byram Hills gave Fox Lane its first loss in a brow-raising 4-0 victory.
Ryan Pero scored twice and Max Miller anchored an excellent defense, leading the Bobcats in a thorough win over an opponent that was ranked ninth in Class AA by the New York State Sportswriters Association.
“That was very sweet, especially for the defense, which hasn’t given up a goal at home,” Allen said. “The guys were pretty stoked, and a little surprised at how well they played… It’s definitely a boost for us because (Fox Lane) is our neighboring school, and they were a sectional runner-up last year.”
Leo Greco and Reid du Toit each added a goal for Byram Hills (4-1-2).
This win on its own would turn heads, but it’s made more significant by the Bobcats having held defending Class AA champion Tappan Zee scoreless in an early-season tie, and later pulling a 3-0 upset of defending Class A champ Rye, dealing that team its only loss to this point.
Byram Hills went scoreless in its first three games, which contributed to that “sleeper” status. But, Allen said, “We put a lot of effort into that and went to work, and I told them, ‘If we score one, we’ll probably break through and score a few.’”
They’ve since scored 14 goals during a four-game win streak, and they’ve gotten production from several players in a balanced unit. Pero, Allen said, played his best game against the Foxes.
It’s not at all far-fetched now to believe this team, which reached the Section 1 Class A semifinals last fall, has a chance to match or even surpass that.
Offense was a concern after they graduated superstar Chris Amenedo, who had a part in most of their goals last season.
It is, of course, an enviable luxury to have a dominant go-to weapon who can bail a team out during its struggles or make a dynamic play to eke out a win even if they’ve been outplayed. But, if there is a silver lining in being without an all-eyes-on-him standout, it’s the collective lift.
“When you have one elite scorer, defenses focus on him,” Allen said. “When you face a great defense, if they’re able to shut down that guy down, the rest of the team might start to panic a little. But when you have some balance, it’s harder for teams to determine who to key in on.”
The Bobcats’ own defense has let up just one goal so far, in a season-opening loss. Defensive midfielder Bertram Parlev has been a key factor in that. Miller and center back Alexander Safaei also have excelled, and Jake Chapman’s performance has been a boon, the senior returning to form after a torn ACL faster than most had anticipated.
“We’ve been streaky,” the coach said. “It’s really about developing consistency, and the biggest thing I want to see is how they handle adversity.”
So far, at least over the last couple weeks, they’ve checked a lot of boxes.
