Binghamton to build new fire station next to 66-year-old facility

A location is officially set for a new fire station located in Binghamton’s North Side neighborhood, though residents won’t have to travel far to see it.

On July 16, Binghamton Mayor Jared Kraham announced the new station will be located at 419-423 Chenango St., immediately adjacent to the existing North Side fire station. The new station, which was originally announced in July 2025, will replace the current, 66-year-old station, which Kraham said is “nearing the end of its useful life.”

The selection of the Chenango Street site comes after months of reviews focused on response times, call data and facility requirements headed by Vestal design company CPL.

New North Side fire station will be located next to current station

The property the new station will be built on was purchased by the City of Binghamton from Broome County following property tax foreclosures. To prepare for future development, an existing vacant gas station and car wash, as well as a blighted residential property, were demolished by the city.

According to Kraham, the project’s multi-year approach ensures city taxpayers will bear less of the burden, with extra time allowing the city to seek state and federal grant funding. CPL’s work on the project’s predevelopment phase includes site selection, building and site programming and a conceptual design for the new facility — tools that will allow the city to prepare grant applications for a final design project and ultimately construct the building.

According to Fire Chief Thomas Edwards, the facility will allow Binghamton firefighters to continue their critical work well into the future due to modernization efforts.

“This is an exciting step forward in the city’s work to build a new fire station to serve the North Side,” said Edwards. “This new site will allow the Fire Department to continue providing the top-quality emergency services that residents have come to expect and deserve. This location and facility will allow the station to not only meet the needs of the North Side and support citywide emergency services as it currently does, but will also provide for anticipated future developments in this neighborhood.”

For Kraham, the new location not only offers the chance to build a state-of-the-art fire facility, but also reflects additional investment in a growing North Side neighborhood. The new facility will be located adjacent to the Binghamton Plaza, the site of significant redevelopment efforts by the City.

“This location will ensure residents continue to experience the best possible emergency response times and offers the city a sizable blank slate to build the cutting-edge fire station our first-responders deserve,” said Kraham. “With the redevelopment of the Binghamton Plaza site and the ongoing affordable housing project at Town & Country nearby, this project will further revitalize a critical North Side corridor that is already seeing major investments.”
