Bills Injury update: Buffalo may lose another player in beleaguered secondary

ORCHARD PARK – Following Sunday night’s 38-0 loss to the Chicago Bears, Buffalo Bills rookie defensive back Jordan Hancock seemed upbeat about his prognosis after suffering a shoulder injury early in the third quarter.

He looked to be in considerable pain when he went down after making a tackle, his eighth of the night, and he was on the field for a couple minutes being attended to by the Bills’ medical staff. He did eventually walk off under his own power, but did not go to the locker room and afterward, he said he felt fine, no worries.

As always when it comes to injuries, you generally ignore what players and coaches say because rarely do they tell the truth. Hancock was held out of Tuesday’s practice at One Bills Drive and Sean McDermott doubted he’d be able to play Saturday when the Bills close the preseason at Tampa Bay.

“Don’t know yet,” McDermott said of Hancock’s status. “I think the early projection, if you will, may not make the game this weekend. I thought he flashed in the game the other night a little bit. Still a lot of work to do, but now he’s sidelined, so we’re kind of on a stop right now with that.”

Here is an update on the rest of the Bills’ continuing lengthy injury list:

K Tyler Bass injury update

He continues to recover from a pelvic injury and is still limited. McDermott did say of his availability for the game, “I hope so. That’s the goal. We have a schedule that’s been laid out with his rehab as well, and he’s going to inch forward this week. If all goes well according to plan, he will kick with the teams and then hopefully going into the game this week.”

OL Sedrick Van Pran-Granger injury update

He has not practiced once since training camp began due to a calf injury and it seems that he’s destined for injured reserve to start the season. At one point a couple weeks ago McDermott mentioned the Tampa Bay game as a target, but missing another practice Tuesday makes that unlikely.

CB Maxwell Hairston injury update

The rookie first-round pick is off crutches and Tuesday he was seen on the exercise bike at practice. “Yeah, still a ways away,” McDermott said. “Just from what I heard (Monday) from Nate (Breske, the head trainer) is he’s really trying to still get a feel for exactly what we’re dealing with in terms of when we can start to push a little bit more without affecting the healing of it.”

WR Khalil Shakir injury update

He has a high ankle sprain and he’s going to miss the rest of training camp, but all indications are that he’ll be able to play in Week 1 against the Ravens.

LB Keonta Jenkins injury update

The undrafted rookie free agent sat out the session due to an ankle injury suffered in the game at Chicago.

WR Curtis Samuel injury update

For the first time since very early in camp, he was back on the field in full and that might mean he sees action against the Buccaneers. Samuel’s lack of time on the field may have put his roster spot in jeopardy.

OT Tylan Grable injury update

He has been in concussion protocol for close to two weeks, but he was working on the side Tuesday so that indicates he is progressing through the necessary stages.

LB Shaq Thompson injury update

The veteran has been out more than two weeks with a hamstring injury, but he was back in full Tuesday. With some of the younger linebackers not really stepping up, Thompson has a real shot to make the team.

C Connor McGovern injury update

He suffered a hamstring injury in the joint practice Friday in Chicago, so the Bills are going to be very careful with him leading up to the Week 1 showdown with the Ravens.

OL Kendrick Green injury update

He was playing with the first unit at center with McGovern sidelined, and he seemed to aggravate the arm injury that he has been dealing with.

OL Alec Anderson injury update

He underwent a knee procedure about two weeks ago, but he was back in a limited capacity Tuesday, and when Green had to exit, Anderson handled the reps in the 11-on-11 period.

LB Edefuan Ulofoshio injury update

He was already in danger of not making the team and now he’s dealing with a toe injury so he participated in a limited fashion Tuesday.

DE Javon Solomon injury update

He suffered a wrist injury in the game at Chicago and was limited in the workout.

S Cam Lewis injury update

He hurt his calf in the joint practice and sat out the game, then worked on a limited basis Tuesday.

QB Mike White injury update

He banged his hand during the practice, left to get it wrapped and did not participate thereafter.
