Allegany County resident charged with extorting more than $250K in online caper

An Allegany County resident was charged June 25 with extorting more than a quarter million dollars from a Schenectady County victim through an online scheme.

Princetown-based New York State Police arrested Charlee J. Cobin, 29 of Angelica, charging her with second-degree grand larceny, a class C felony.

The State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation in Princetown said it followed up on a May 22, 2025 complaint from the Schenectady County District Attorney’s Office regarding a resident reporting they were a victim of extortion.

According to investigators, Cobin met the victim online in April 2024. During their communications, Cobin allegedly requested money from the victim, which they initially refused to provide, authorities said.

At that point, Cobin threatened to reveal the pair’s communications, State Police said, which would have exposed the victim to significant embarrassment and ridicule.

Troopers allege Cobin extorted more than $250,000 from the victim between April 2024 and April 2025.

Cobin was arrested at her home in Allegany County and transported to Princetown for processing.

She was arraigned at the Schenectady City Court and released on her own recognizance.

The next court date was not immediately available.
