9/11-related cancer claims the life of Harrison firefighter

Harrison firefighter Kenny Fusco was a former boxer, but the 67-year-old Harrison resident lost his courageous bout with a 9/11-related cancer on May 18. On Saturday, May 23, firefighters and first responders from across the region lined Halstead Avenue outside Saint Gregory the Great Roman Catholic Church in Harrison for Fusco’s funeral mass.

Like many other local first responders, Fusco was part of the rescue and recovery efforts at Ground Zero in the days following the tragedy.

In 2017, Fusco was awarded Firefighter of the Year by the Harrison Fire Department. According to Harrison Fire Chief John Masciola, “Firefighter Fusco will be remembered not only for his bravery on 9/11, but for a lifetime of service, mentorship, and brotherhood within the fire service. He was a pillar in the Harrison community and touched many lives with his kind heart and generous nature.”

Fusco is survived by his wife Cindy, four children and three grandchildren. He was taken to his final resting place at Greenwood Union Cemetery following the funeral mass.
