7 revenge-game storylines for the Jets-Titans Week 1 matchup

The New York Jets unveiled their complete 2026 NFL schedule in a coordinated league-wide effort. Before the official release, we learned the Jets would travel to Tennessee to take on the Titans in Week 1. It represents shrewd scheduling by the NFL’s decision makers.

With so many appetizing revenge-game storylines in Week 1, we’ve identified every Jets-Titans thread to be familiar with:

Jets: T’Vondre Sweat, NT

The Titans traded T’Vondre Sweat to the Jets earlier this offseason. Rumors began circulating immediately. Sweat had alleged work ethic concerns in Tennessee, and they no longer viewed him as a scheme fit for the new defense. Sweat immediately reacted on social media.

Jets: Jarvis Brownlee, CB

The Titans also traded Jarvis Brownlee to the Jets last season for essentially nothing. Despite Brownlee being a starter on the Titans, they were willing to discard him for a late-round pick swap. That’s how dissatisfied they allegedly were with his character. Unsurprisingly, he also posted a strong reaction on social media.

Other Jets tidbits

Jets reserve guard Xavier Newman-Johnson began his career as a Titans undrafted free agent. He’s settled in nicely with the Jets. Wide receivers coach Shawn Jefferson both played (1991, Houston Oilers) and coached (2013-15) for the organization. Frank Reich had legendary playoff battles with the Oilers as a quarterback, and also coached their division rival Indianapolis Colts for years.

Titans: Robert Saleh, head coach

Robert Saleh being the new coach of the Titans is probably primarily why this matchup got the Week 1 treatment. Saleh coached the Jets for three-and-a-half seasons, failing to meet expectations. He believes the Titans, with quarterback Cam Ward, are a better opportunity than he ever got in East Rutherford.

Titans: Jermaine Johnson II, EDGE

The Jets traded EDGE Jermaine Johnson II to the Titans in exchange for Sweat this offseason. Johnson is coming off a disappointing 2025 campaign and played his best football with Saleh’s defense. He’ll be anxious to prove he deserved better.

Titans: John Franklin-Myers, DL

John Franklin-Myers is another defensive lineman who broke out with Saleh’s Jets. The Jets eventually traded him to Denver for very little. Franklin-Myers continued ascending into a high-quality player in Denver, and reunited with Saleh by signing a lucrative contract with the Titans in free agency.

Other Titans tidbits

The Titans also have a slew of former Jets players in reduced rotational roles, such as Jordan Elliott, Solomon Thomas, Jacob Martin, Michael Carter, and Tony Adams. Saleh really tried to bring everything with him to Tennessee. On his coaching staff are former Jets players/assistants Aaron Whitecotton, Tanzel Smart (former player now coaching), Tony Oden, and Marquand Manuel.
