An 11-year-old was badly burned in a house fire in Palmyra, Wayne County, Sunday night, according to the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office.
The child was one of three children hospitalized following the blaze at 1228 Rolfe St., deputies said. It was initially reported that a child was trapped inside the house, but when emergency responders arrived at the scene shortly after 9:15 p.m. Sunday, three children were already outside and had escaped the burning home.
The 11-year-old was taken to Strong Memorial Hospital by Mercy Flight to be treated for burns while the other two children – an 8-year-old and a 14-year-old – were taken to Strong via ambulance to be treated for smoke inhalation.
Firefighters arrived at he two-story house to find “heavy flames shooting out of the front door and windows,” according to the Palmyra Fire Department. Heavy flames were also rising from the back of the home. It took firefighters from multiple departments about 1 hour and 20 minutes to control the blaze.
Further details were not released. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
