Shortly after the arrival of fire personnel, first responders determined that the resident was deceased in the home. The victim was subsequently removed while efforts to extinguish the fire were ongoing, Chemung County Sheriff Bill Schrom said.

Deputies remained on the scene throughout the night until state and county fire investigators responded back to the scene of the fire Saturday morning to continue their investigation, Schrom said. The Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigation Division is assisting fire investigators with the investigation in an effort to determine the cause of the blaze.

Further information will be forthcoming upon notification to family members and once a cause of the fire is ultimately determined, Schrom said.
