The week of May 3-9 was another big one for high school male athletes from the Des Moines metro area.
Area boys track and field athletes competed in conference meets as they gear up for the state qualifying meets, which take place this week. There were a number of exciting boys soccer games, tennis matches and golf meets during the week as well.
Several athletes stood out from the metro area.
Here are the Des Moines Register’s male Athlete of the Week candidates from the Des Moines metro area for the week of May 3-9. DesMoinesRegister.com readers vote to determine the winners, who will be announced at the end of the week.
Aiden Curtis, Indianola
Curtis placed first in the boys discus at the Little Hawkeye Conference meet in Indianola on May 5 with the third-best throw in the state according to Varsity Bound.
The winning distance for Curtis was 180 feet, 5 inches. He beat teammate Max Bauer by 9 feet, 5 inches for the win.
Jackson Miller, Dowling Catholic
Miller ran the third leg on the Dowling Catholic boys 4×100-meter relay team that ran the fastest time in the state so far at the CIML boys track and field meet on May 7 at Waukee.
Dowling won the race in 41.32 seconds to beat their 41.34 time run at the Drake Relays in April. Miller also placed second individually in the open 100 with a time of 10.80.
Alexis Martinez-Sanchez, Des Moines North
Martinez-Sanchez had a tremendous game distributing the ball for the Des Moines North boys soccer team during a 10-0 victory over Waterloo East on May 4 at Waterloo.
Sanchez dished out four assists during the win. He also scored one goal for the Polar Bears.
Tate Duax, Ankeny Centennial
Duax had a busy night on offense for the Class 4A No. 1 Ankeny Centennial boys soccer team during a 5-2 victory over Waukee on May 8 at Ankeny.
Duax found the back of the net four times on seven shots on goal to help the Jaguars improve to 10-0-2.
Easton Moon, North Polk
Moon helped the North Polk boys tennis team win the North Polk Invitational on May 8 at Alleman.
Moon teamed with Cohen Richardson to go 3-0 in the No. 1 doubles spot during the tournament. The Comet team defeated Southeast Polk’s Cohen Fuller and Jacoby Marshall by a 10-0 score and they scored 10-3 victories over two Boone teams in the Toreadors’ Brandon Holm and Logan Wickman and Strummer Grout and Cal Jordan.
Moon also swept Marshalltown’s Caleb Rasmussen (6-0, 6-1) and Pella’s Trevin Sutton (6-1, 6-2) in No. 1 singles competition during the Comets double-dual with Marshalltown and Pella on May 4 at Pella.
