Vote for the Register male Athlete of the Week for Feb. 1-7

The week of Feb. 1-7 saw the IHSAA boys wrestling state duals tournament and boys swimming district meets take place.

State duals were held Feb. 7 at Xtream Arena in Coralville. The 2026 boys state swimming meet field was set at the conclusion of the six district meets held across the state.

There were also some exciting matchups in boys basketball during the week. The headline game featuring teams from the Des Moines metro area saw Class 4A No. 3 Waukee knock off No. 2 Waukee Northwest, 63-60, on Feb. 3 at Waukee.

Several individual male athletes from the metro area stood out during the week.

Here are the Des Moines Register’s male Athlete of the Week candidates from the Des Moines metro area for the week of Feb. 1-7. DesMoinesRegister.com readers vote to determine the winners, who will be announced at the end of the week.

Eddie Woody, Southeast Polk

Woody helped the Southeast Polk boys wrestling program roll to another state duals team championship in Class 3A on Feb. 7 at Xtream Arena in Coralville.

Woody, ranked No. 1 at 126 pounds in 3A by IAwrestle.com, pinned all three of his opponents during Southeast Polk’s 54-15 victory over Pleasant Valley, 46-25 win over Dowling Catholic and 57-11 triumph over Indianola. He pinned Pleasant Valley’s Holden Lindeman in one minute, two seconds, Dowling’s Josh Bergkamp in 59 seconds and Indianola’s Hayden Wessel in 3:52.

Max Roach, Waukee

Roach led 4A No. 3 Waukee to its big 63-60 rivalry win over No. 2 Waukee Northwest on Feb. 3 at Waukee.

Roach posted a team-high 18 points after making 8 of 14 field goals. He also recorded four rebounds, three assists and three steals.

Alfred Kolee, Dowling Catholic

Kolee was sizzling from the field for the 4A No. 4 Dowling boys basketball team during a 63-53 victory over No. 10 Ankeny on Feb. 6 in West Des Moines.

Kolee torched Ankeny for 25 points on an incredible 12 of 13 shooting performance from the field. He also pulled down 12 rebounds and handed out three assists.

Will Van Zee, Valley

Van Zee placed first in both the 200 and 500-yard freestyle races for the West Des Moines Valley boys swimming team during the boys district swimming meet in Mason City on Feb. 7.

Van Zee won the 200 freestyle in one minute, 42.12 seconds, and he touched the wall in 4:30.44 during the 500 freestyle. He qualified for state in both events.

Charlie King, Des Moines Roosevelt

King turned in an excellent all-around performance for the 4A No. 8 Des Moines Roosevelt boys basketball team during an 84-44 drubbing of Des Moines North on Feb. 5 in Des Moines.

King went for 17 points after making 6 of 10 field goals. He also tallied eight rebounds, six assists, four steals and two blocks.
