The week of May 10-16 saw state qualifying co-ed track and field meets take place across the state.
The state qualifying meets were all run on May 14. There were some outstanding individual performances and relay efforts by female athletes from the Des Moines metro area.
It was also another busy week of high school girls soccer and golf featuring athletes and teams from the metro area.
Here are the Des Moines Register’s female Athlete of the Week candidates from the Des Moines metro area for the week of May 10-16. DesMoinesRegister.com readers vote to determine the winners, who will be announced at the end of the week.
Isabel Spradling, Des Moines Roosevelt
Spradling won the girls 3,000-meter run at the Class 4A state qualifying co-ed track and field meet in Indianola on May 14.
Spradling ran a time of 10 minutes, 23.46 seconds to win the race by 4.15 seconds over Ames’ Emma Stanley. Spradling’s time is the third fastest among 4A qualifying times.
Rebecca Flick, Ankeny Centennial
Flick brought home the girls open 800 title and she also anchored Ankeny Centennial to victory in the distance medley relay at the 4A qualifying meet in Waukee on May 14.
Flick crossed the finish line of the 800 in 2:14.14. That is the fastest qualifying time in 4A.
The Centennial distance medley team ran a time of 4:05.72. That is also the best 4A qualifying time in the state.
Katie Willits, Waukee Northwest
Willits continues to amaze for Waukee Northwest.
She cruised to victory in three individual events and one relay at the 4A qualifying track and field meet in Waukee on May 14.
Willits won the 100 in 12.07, the 200 in 24.40 and the 100 hurdles in 14.21. Her 100 and 200 times are the best 4A qualifying times in the state, and her 100 hurdles effort ranks second to Valley’s Morgan Karr.
Willits also anchored Northwest to victory in the 4×100 relay. The Wolves’ time of 46.73 is the fastest qualifying time by 1.23 seconds.
Elise Coghlan, ADM
Coghlan picked up two individual gold medals for the Adel-Desoto-Minburn girls track and field team during the 3A qualifying meet in Glenwood on May 14.
Coghlan won the 100 hurdles with 3A’s best qualifying time of 14.58 seconds. She ran the only qualifying time under 15 seconds.
Coghlan won the 400 hurdles in 1:04.07, which is the second-best qualifying time behind Williamsburg’s Ava Hocker.
Coghlan also anchored ADM to the fastest qualifying time in the shuttle hurdle relay after the Tigers won the qualifying race at Glenwood with a time of 1:04.50.
Bella Moede, Norwalk
Moede came up clutch for the Norwalk girls soccer team during its Class 2A No. 1 versus No. 2 showdown against Waverly-Shell Rock on May 15 at Norwalk.
Moede led the No. 2 Warriors to a 1-0 victory over the No. 1 Go-Hawks by scoring the only goal of the game. Her goal came off an assist from Ella Seeley during the first half.
