The week of Nov. 2-8 saw the 2025 IGHSAU state volleyball championships take place at Xtream Arena in Coralville.
Five state champions were crowned during the week, including one team from the Des Moines metro area. Waukee Northwest capped an amazing 38-1 season with the Class 5A state championship.
Eight teams from the metro area competed at the state volleyball tournament. There were several outstanding individual performances by area athletes during the tournament.
Here are the Des Moines Register’s female Athlete of the Week candidates from the Des Moines metro area for the week of Nov. 2-8. DesMoinesRegister.com readers vote to determine the winners, who will be announced at the end of the week.
Avery Vogt, Waukee Northwest
Vogt was named captain of the 5A all-tournament team after leading Waukee Northwest to three sweeps during the state volleyball tournament.
Vogt finished the tournament with 107 assists, 23 digs, 13 kills, four blocks and one ace at setter. She had 36 assists, nine digs, three blocks and two kills in a 25-10, 25-21, 25-18 sweep over Ankeny Centennial in the 5A championship match on Nov. 6.
Tatem Schmidt, Ankeny Centennial
Schmidt was a 5A all-tournament selection after helping Centennial reach the 5A title match.
She had a tremendous all-around tournament for the Jaguars. Schmidt recorded 12 digs, 11 assists and five kills against Waukee Northwest in the title match; 14 assists, 12 digs, eight kills and six blocks against Valley in the semifinals and 15 kills, 15 assists, 11 digs and two blocks in the quarterfinals versus Iowa City West.
Kaelyn Wieland, Valley
Wieland was a 5A all-tournament selection after helping West Des Moines Valley reach the state volleyball semifinals.
Wieland tallied 26 assists, 10 kills, six digs and two aces in a five-set quarterfinal win over Pleasant Valley. She finished with 18 assists, 15 digs, eight kills, two blocks and one ace in a semifinal loss to Centennial.
Gwen Farley, DCG
Farley was fantastic at setter in a losing effort for Dallas Center-Grimes during a 25-27, 25-17, 16-25, 23-25 loss to North Scott in the 4A quarterfinals at the state volleyball tournament on Nov. 5 at Coralville.
Farley dished out 45 assists in a losing effort. She also contributed 11 digs, six kills and two blocks to go along with a perfect 16 of 16 serving effort.
Hailey Wiederin, Ankeny
Wiederin played well at the net for Ankeny during the state volleyball tournament.
Wiederin registered 18 kills on 28% efficiency during the Hawks’ 18-25, 25-17, 17-25, 25-17, 15-11 quarterfinal win over Dowling Catholic on Nov. 3. She added seven kills and three blocks during their semifinal loss to Waukee Northwest.
