Two dead in crash after illegal U-turn on northern Iowa highway

Two people died in a northern Iowa accident that occurred when a driver made an illegal U-turn, the Iowa State Patrol reports

The crash occurred about 7:30 p.m. Friday, April 3. The state patrol said in a report that Michael Michelson, 65, of Belmond, was making the U-turn on southbound Highway 69 at 200th Street, just south of Belmond, when the 2000 Ford Ranger he was driving was hit by a southbound 2014 Dodge Ram 1500.

Michelson and his passenger, Ellen Countryman, 71, also of Belmond, died at the scene, according to the report, which said Michelson was wearing a seatbelt but Countryman was not.

The diver of the Ram, Mcain Alan Hefti, 25, of nearby Dows, apparently was unhurt. The report listed no charges in connection with the wreck.
