Small plane lands at Ankeny golf course after engine malfunction

A small plane slid across an Ankeny golf course after making an emergency landing because of an engine malfunction.

The Ankeny Police Department was dispatched to the Briarwood Golf Club, 3405 N.E. Trilein Drive, at around 11:30 a.m. Thursday, July 24 after a plane was forced to land on the course, Sgt. Trevor McGraw said.

“Luckily, nobody was injured,” McGraw said. “My guess would be he didn’t think he’d be able to make it safely to the airfield.”

The pilot landed near the 12th hole, McGraw said. The Ankeny Regional Airport is about 6 miles south of the golf course.

McGraw said officials from the Federal Aviation Administration were at the scene talking to the pilot before police arrived.

Police did not immediately know how many people were on the plane. McGraw also did not know where the plane was flying to or from.
