Rutgers football fans recreate Kinnick Wave after first quarter of game vs Iowa

After the opening 15 minutes of a hard-fought matchup between Iowa football and Rutgers, the Scarlet Knights showed a little love to the Hawkeyes and their fans — and, more importantly, some ailing kids and their families back in Iowa City.

With Iowa and Rutgers engaged in a 14-14 deadlock after the first quarter of their Big Ten opener, the home crowd at SHI Stadium in Piscataway, New Jersey, took part in the famed Kinnick (or Hawkeye) Wave, with the scarlet-and-white-clad Scarlet Knights fans waving back to patients at UI Stead Family Children’s Hospital.

It wasn’t just the fans taking part in it, either. A group of drones just outside of the stadium formed the outline of a large hand, which also waved.

Since its inception in 2017, the Hawkeye Wave has become one of the most beloved traditions in college football, with Iowa fans at the end of the first quarter of every contest at Kinnick Stadium waving to pediatric patients and their families watching the game from the adjacent UI Stead Family Children’s Hospital.

Despite being outgained by a 195-59 margin, and running only nine plays to their opponent’s 22, coach Kirk Ferentz’s Hawkeyes were tied with Rutgers 14-14 after the first quarter, thanks in large part to a 100-yard Kaden Wetjen return for a touchdown on the opening kickoff.
