The Iowa Department of Transportation expects the roadway impacted by the collapsed railroad bridge in Des Moines to be reopened by Wednesday, July 22.
The bridge collapsed on July 17 after a truck exceeding the height limit struck the bridge while going under it.
Northwest Second Street is closed from Northeast Aurora Avenue to Northeast Broadway Avenue for emergency repairs. A detour includes taking Northeast Aurora Avenue to U.S. Highway 69 and then Northeast Broadway Avenue back to Northwest Second Street.
Department of transportation staff are working on replacing the bridge and railroad tracks. After that, the staff will inspect the road for damages and make any necessary repairs. The damaged guardrail along the roadway will also be replaced, according to a release from the department.
The department reminds motorists to drive cautiously through the area, obeying posted speed limit and road work signage.
