Meet the nominees for Press-Citizen’s Athletes of the Week, June 23-29

There were a number of standout performances in high school baseball and softball in the Iowa City area last week.

Here are the nominees for the Iowa City Press-Citizen’s high school Athletes of the Week for June 23-29. Press-Citizen.com readers vote to decide this week’s winners. Voting closes at 8 p.m. Thursday.

Girls

Keegan Kleppe, Soph., Solon

Kleppe posted a strong performance during Solon softball’s 6-5 win over Center Point-Urbana on June 25.

She totaled two RBIs against the Stormin Pointers.

Kylie Mattoon, Soph., Iowa City Regina

Mattoon helped Regina softball earn a 6-3 win over Keokuk on June 28.

She led the team with two RBIs and recorded a hit.

Iyana Merino, Fr., Iowa City High

Merino hit a home run during City High softball’s 14-2 win over Iowa City West in the second game of a doubleheader on June 25.

The freshman recorded two hits, including her ninth homer of the season. She also posted a single in game one.

Max Pech, Sr., Iowa City West

Pech had a strong start in the circle during Iowa City West softball’s 2-1 win over Charles City on June 27.

The senior allowed four hits with just one run through seven innings. Pech tossed four strikeouts during that stretch.

Kyla Schulte, Jr., Clear Creek Amana

Schulte was a key player during CCA softball’s 15-2 win over South Tama on June 25.

She tallied three hits, including a home run against the Trojans. She also scored three runs and added two RBIs.

Boys

Declan Bunn, Sr., Iowa City West

Bunn helped Iowa City West baseball earn an 11-5 win over Davenport North in the first game of a doubleheader on June 25.

He totaled three RBIs, two runs and a hit. He also recorded two stolen bases. Bunn posted a hit and RBI in game two.

Jack Gavin, Soph., Iowa City Regina

Gavin had a solid pitching performance during Regina baseball’s 5-0 win over Tipton on June 26.

Gavin tossed two strikeouts in five innings against the Tigers. He limited Tipton to one hit during his time on the mound and he added a hit at the plate.

Nicholas Meredith, Sr., Iowa City High

Meredith tossed a gem on the mound during City High’s 6-0 win over Linn-Mar on June 23.

Through six scoreless innings, the senior pitcher tossed three strikeouts and limited the Lions to three hits.

Dallas Miller, Sr., Iowa City Liberty

Miller posted a great performance during Liberty baseball’s 10-0 shutout win over Ottumwa in the second game of a doubleheader on June 24.

He went 3-for-3 at the plate, drove in four runs and earned a stolen base. He also posted an RBI in game one.

Maclane Morgan, Sr., Clear Creek Amana

Morgan was a top contributor during CCA baseball’s 8-4 win over Marion.

The CCA senior led the team with three RBIs and blasted a home run against the Wolves.
