Kate Martin is playing with a new WNBA team, the Golden State Valkyries, and the expansion franchise is already drawing large crowds.
According to the Valkyries, the former Iowa women’s basketball star and her team played in front of 17,428 fans on May 6, the third-largest crowd for a preseason game in WNBA history.

Although Golden State fell to the Los Angeles Sparks, 83-82, Martin had a solid performance in the team’s preseason opener, notching eight points, three rebounds and two steals in 18 minutes on 2-for-8 shooting.
Martin is coming off a solid rookie season with the Las Vegas Aces and an Unrivaled 3-on-3 season that saw her miss the final several games with a leg injury.
WNBA rosters are not finalized until May 15. Martin has one more preseason game, vs. Phoenix at 5 p.m. CT, May 11, to make her case for being one of the roster’s final 12 players.
