Iowa wrestling adds Oklahoma transfer Carter Schubert

Iowa wrestling has picked up another key piece in the transfer portal.

Former Oklahoma Sooner Carter Schubert will be a Hawkeye. Schubert distributed the news through the Baschamania podcast and IAWrestle, as Schubert posted their graphics to his Instagram on Friday, April 17.

Schubert began his career at California Baptist, going 3-1 at 165 pounds in 2023-24. He transferred to Oklahoma and competed at 157 pounds as a redshirt freshman with a 3-3 ledger in 2024-25. Last season was his breakout year, going 21-8 at 174 pounds. He won the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational and was just one win from NCAA All-American status after made the round of 12 at the 2026 NCAA Championships with the Sooners. He projects to have at least two years of eligibility remaining.

Schubert has wrestled three different weights in his career, but the median of those would be 165 pounds, which is Iowa’s most-glaring need on the roster. Assuming he can wrestle at the weight, he slots in as a potential Michael Caliendo replacement next season.

With that, the Hawkeyes have now filled their two biggest needs for the 2026-27 lineup. Schubert joins Lehigh 133-pounder Ryan Crookham for Iowa’s transfer portal haul thus far. Crookham, a third-place finisher at the 2024 NCAA Championships, fills in for Drake Ayala following his graduation.

There’s still plenty of time and names in the transfer portal for Iowa to ponder in the coming days, but the Hawkeyes’ two biggest pieces of business look complete.
