No. 10 Iowa women’s basketball (17-2, 8-0 Big Ten) survives a furious comeback by No. 13 Maryland (17-4, 5-4 Big Ten) to escape XFINITY Center with an 85-78 overtime victory to keep their perfect Big Ten record intact.
Iowa’s offense had been stellar for most of the night, but miscues late in the fourth quarter allowed Maryland to score 17 points during the final four minutes and tie the game.
Ava Heiden finished with the team lead in scoring for Iowa with 20 points on 9-for-13 from the floor and 2-for-2 from the free-throw line, to go along with 8 rebounds and two assists. While the 6-foot-4 center played the fourth quarter and overtime period with four fouls, her ability to come up clutch in the biggest moments proved to be the difference-maker.
Hannah Stuelke also picked up her fifth double-double of the season with 12 points, 11 rebounds, to go along with 5 assists, 1 steal, and 1 block.
Maryland was led by 6-foot-3 junior forward Isimenme Ozzy-Momodu, who posted 18 points on 8-for-15 shooting and 2-for-2 from the line, to go along with her 12 rebounds, two blocks, and 1 steal.
With what turned into an unexpected scare on Thursday night in College Park behind them, the Hawkeyes will have a few days to assess their late-game strategies before taking on No. 11 Ohio State from Carver-Hawkeye Arena on Sunday, Jan. 25.
