Iowa women’s basketball guard Callie Levin entering transfer portal

IOWA CITY — Iowa women’s basketball sophomore Callie Levin is entering the transfer portal after two years with the Hawkeyes, she announced March 30 on social media.

A 5-foot-9 guard from up the road in Solon, Levin averaged 5.9 minutes and 1.2 points per game while appearing in 19 contests. Her role as an energy-option off the bench increased some in her second collegiate season, but it appears this portal entry is a search for more minutes elsewhere.

Levin’s biggest contributions came when Iowa’s backcourt was down a player here and there throughout the year. With Chit-Chat Wright and Kylie Feuerbach missing games during non-conference and right at the beginning of Big Ten play — then later in the immediate aftermath of Taylor McCabe’s season-ending ACL tear on Jan. 25 — Levin appeared earlier in games and more often than she did as a freshman.

Levin appeared in 10 of Iowa’s 18 regular-season conference games, as well as two of the three contests at the Big Ten Tournament. Season-highs in minutes (14) and points (6) arrived in Iowa’s 86-69 win over Western Illinois on Nov. 26. From there, Levin had five points at Rutgers on Dec. 6, two points at USC on Jan. 29 and two points against Michigan on Feb. 22.

Often the first player to greet teammates entering a timeout and the most demonstrative supporter on the bench, there was definitely an Iowa role for Levin as a team-cohesion enhancer. But the Solon product is likely heading to a place where game-action is more significant and less sporadic.

The transfer-portal window officially opens April 6 after the national championship game and runs through April 20.
