The National Weather Service in Des Moines warns that heavy rain and severe storms are expected late Thursday, June 4, and continuing into the weekend. A flood watch is in effect for parts of the state through Friday morning.

What is the severe weather outlook in Iowa for Thursday?
A marginal or Level 1 (out of 5) risk is in place for much of western, central and northern Iowa, including Sioux City, stretching to Des Moines and extending to Waterloo and Decorah. Storms are expected to start in western Iowa as early as 2 p.m. Thursday, moving east-northeast at 30 mph.
A second round of storms is expected to develop late Friday afternoon, June 5, and continue into the evening, with flash flooding, large hail and damaging wind gusts possible.
Des Moines metro is among areas at risk for flash flooding on Thursday
A Level 2 “Slight Risk” for excessive rainfall — meaning at least a 15% chance of flash flooding within 25 miles — is in place Thursday night for parts of southern and central Iowa, including the Des Moines metro and stretching northeast toward Marshalltown and Cedar Rapids.
Storms could produce between 2 and 4 inches of rain and trigger flash flooding by Friday morning, according to the NWS.
What is the forecast in Des Moines for Thursday?
Showers and thunderstorms are expected in Des Moines on Thursday, mainly during the afternoon and evening hours, according to the NWS. The high for Thursday is 85 degrees with south-southwest winds between 10 and 15 mph. Storms are likely to continue Thursday night with overnight lows near 65 degrees.
