Iowa State women's basketball lets late lead slip away, falls at TCU

The Iowa State women’s basketball team nearly did something no opposing team has been able to do to TCU in a long time.

Iowa State was in control for most of the day but let a late lead slip away before falling to No. 11 TCU 80-73 at Schollmaier Arena in Fort Worth, Texas, on Feb. 22.

The Cyclones dropped to 21-7 on the season including 9-7 in Big 12 Conference play while letting a giant opportunity slip away.

Iowa State, looking to add a huge resume-building win to its resume, had a chance to end TCU’s winning streak at home. TCU entered the game having won 40 straight at home.

After a great showing for the first three and a half quarters, Iowa State was poised to do just that. The Cyclones led by 13 points with under 8 minutes to play.

But then things slipped away for Iowa State as TCU went on a 14-0 run to take the lead and never let it go. Cyclones star Audi Crooks, who finished with 22 points, fouled out late in the fourth quarter.

Iowa State could not recover despite big games from Crooks and Cyclones point guard Jada Williams, who scored 15 points, grabbed seven rebounds and handed out 11 assists.

The duo helped Iowa State build a 13-point lead in the second quarter and go into halftime with a six-point lead. The Cyclones were able to survive multiple comeback attempts by TCU.

The Cyclones took a 66-53 lead with 7:35 left in the fourth after Crooks knocked down a pair of free throws.

That’s when TCU went on its run. The Horned Frogs closed out the game with a 16-3 run over the final 3:33. Iowa State missed eight of its final nine shots.

TCU’s Olivia Miles finished with a triple-double after a slow start, scoring 26 points, grabbing 10 rebounds and handing out 10 assists.
