The principal and track coach at Lutheran school in Cedar Falls was recently arrested for “unlawful sexual conduct” with a student at his home.

Lucas Tanney, 40, the 6th through 12th grade principal at Valley Lutheran School in Cedar Falls, was arrested on Friday, May 29, and booked into the Black Hawk County Jail by Waterloo police on a felony charge of sexual exploitation by a school employee, according to a news release.

Police received a report the day prior of an alleged “inappropriate relationship” between Tanney and a student, Waterloo police spokesperson Capt. Gus Farmer said in the release. Tanney was the student’s principal and track coach.

A Valley Lutheran School spokesperson was not available for comment.

Through investigation, police found that “unlawful sexual conduct” allegedly occurred at Tanney’s residence. He was arrested without incident.

The student, a minor, was not identified by police.

Tanney is in jail on a $10,000 cash-only bond, according to an inmate booking. No court filings have been made.

Valley Lutheran School opened a satellite location in 2003.
