Iowa football: Class of 2026 quarterback Cash Herrera decommits from Hawkeyes

IOWA CITY — Class of 2026 quarterback Cash Herrera has decommitted from Iowa football, he announced June 16.

Herrera posted the following via social media: “First off, I would like to thank the staff at Iowa for believing in me. After long discussions with my family, I have decided to re-open my recruitment. I wish nothing but the best for the Iowa program in the future.”

Herrara, who attends The Bishop’s School in La Jolla, California, originally committed to the Hawkeyes in October 2024. Herrera is rated as a 3-star prospect and ranked 805th nationally in the 2026 class, according to the 247Sports Composite. He is regarded as the 46th-best quarterback in the class.

National recruiting analyst Greg Biggins wrote the following about Herrera in 2024:

“Herrera is a late bloomer at the quarterback position who generated a lot of positive buzz this past off-season. He’s a player that the more we dug into him, the more we liked. He was a standout at the SoCal Elite 11 Regional Camp back in March and showed he could hang with some of the top signal callers in the region. He has a smooth, easy delivery and the ball jumps out of his hand. He has a projectable 6-2, 185-pound frame with plenty of room to add good weight.

“He’s a traditional pocket passer but shows good mobility and can make plays off-script when a play breaks down. He has a good feel for the position in terms of throwing on time and with anticipation and can get the ball out quick and from different arm angles, not for show but for necessity. He’s a tough kid as well and will stand in and take a shot to get a throw off. He’s a player that is trending up for us and projects as a high-major Power 4 prospect.”

At the time he committed to Iowa, Herrera had earned offers from a variety of programs, including Virginia Tech, Minnesota, Appalachian State, Yale and UCLA, but chose the Hawkeyes.

In May, while he was still committed to Iowa, Herrera picked up offers from Cal and Arizona.

With Herrera now reopening his recruitment, Iowa is down to nine commitments in the 2026 recruiting class, none of which are quarterbacks. Five of those nine pledges are offensive linemen, as Iowa’s class is stacked with talent in the trenches.

While it is still plenty of time for things to change, Iowa’s 2026 quarterback room currently projects as follows:
