Marty Chitty prevailed in a three-way race with 54% of votes to secure the Republican nomination for the District 2 Story County supervisor seat on Tuesday.
Three Story County Board of Supervisor seats are up for grabs in the November general election. Tuesday’s primary election determined the Republican and Democratic candidates.
Chitty beat out Gannon Hendrick and Ricardo Martinez II for the District 2 nomination.
A total of 2,528 votes were cast. Chitty secured 1,377, Hendrick garnered 904 (36%) and Martinez pulled in 244 (10%), according to unofficial results from the Secretary of State’s website.
Ross Eveland ran uncontested for District 2 as the Democratic candidate. He received 99 percent of the votes (1,839 votes).
Story County Supervisor Linda Murken ran uncontested in the District 1 Democratic primary and received 100 percent of the vote, while Latifah Faisal ran uncontested for the District 3 Democratic seat, securing 100 percent as well. Murken secured 2,947 votes and Faisal pulled in 1,434 votes. Republican candidate Jeff Staton ran uncontested for District 1, securing 99 percent of the votes (1,451 votes), and Kirk Nesset was unopposed in District 3, capturing 99 percent as well (536 votes).
Linda Murken will face Jeff Staton in District 1 race
Murken has been on the Story County Board of Supervisors for over seven years and is the current chair.
Her priorities for Story County are completing rural broadband deployment, increasing affordable housing throughout the county and improving water quality.
Staton is an associate professor of practice at Iowa State University.
His priorities for the county are delivering infrastructure and reliable core services, fiscal discipline and sustainability and targeted growth.
Ross Eveland will face Marty Chitty in District 2 race
Eveland is running for county supervisor because he “strongly believe(s) there should always be at least two options for every election.”
His top three priorities for the county are transparency, fiscal responsibility, and improving and maintaining emergency service access in rural Story County.
Chitty has previous experience on the board of supervisors and is the current Nevada Community School Board president. Fiscal responsibility is also a priority of his, along with rural representation and economic growth.
Latifah Faisal squares off against Kirk Nesset in Dist. 3 race
Faisal has been a county supervisor for six years.
Her top priorities are improving and expanding housing for all income levels, supporting economic opportunities and mobility and prioritizing the county’s quality of life.
Nesset is a field appraiser for the City of Ames Assessors’ Office.
His priorities for the county are government efficiency, commerce and lower property taxes.
