Iowa City police responded to a report of a bomb threat at Iowa City High School, forcing an evacuation and eventual class dismissal.
Authorities responded to the school around 11 a.m. on Tuesday, June 2, police confirmed to the Press-Citizen, and later determined the threat wasn’t viable.
The bomb threat was made via phone call, and the building was cleared around 1:20 p.m.
City High School dismissed classes for the rest of the day after first evacuating students and staff to Bates Field, according to a district message sent to students and families. Students were not allowed to reenter the school until after 3 p.m.
Buses picked up students at Our Redeemer Church shortly after noon.
“While today’s threat was ultimately determined to be not credible, we take all threats seriously, regardless of intent, and law enforcement will continue to investigate the origin of the threat,” City High School Principal John Bacon said in an email to parents following an “all-clear” from law enforcement. “Any threat to a school disrupts learning and causes concern for students, staff, and families. We will ensure that appropriate disciplinary procedures are followed if a student is found to be responsible.”
