Iowa-based CIVCO opens its $15M, 96,000-square-foot facility in Coralville

A local medical production company has opened the doors on a new, $15 million, 96,000-square-foot facility in Coralville.

CIVCO hosted an open house and ribbon cutting to commemorate the facility on Friday, June 6, which was formerly housed along Jones Boulevard. The project broke ground in 2023, enabling the company to relocate its packaging and distribution production from Kalona to Coraville.

The facility houses all of the company’s 140 Iowa employees, which sits near Popeyes and Longhorn Steakhouse.

What does CIVCO do?

CIVCO aims to make imaging procedures safer by “designing, manufacturing and marketing” innovative products since 1981, President Robin Therme said. The company also partners with worldwide ultrasound companies and has products in more than 100 countries, Therme said.

Therme noted that the company’s products had assisted more than 100 million patients in their first 40 years. Therme said CIVCO has assisted an additional 50 million patients worldwide in the last four years. The company’s widening reach meant CIVCO had outgrown its Kalona packaging facility, Therme told the Press-Citizen in 2023.

“Every single member of our organization has been impacted by this move, and many faced new challenges along the way,” Therme said during the June 6 ribbon cutting. “But in true CIVCO fashion, the team came together, stayed focused and exceeded every expectation, delivering this facility on time (and) fully operational… You are simply the best, truly.”

CIVCO receives high praise from state official, contractor

Several local officials visited the CIVCO facility to celebrate the grand opening, including Coralville Mayor Meghann Foster and long-time City Administrator Kelly Hayworth.

Debi Durham, president of the Iowa Economic Development Authority, was also in the crowd and among a small group of speakers featured at the event. She issued high praise for CIVCO’s staff and leadership and the stewardship of the city. The completion of this project, Durham said, “reflects so much of what Iowa does best.”

“We invest in innovation, foster strong communities and build futures, rooted in both vision and values,” Durham said. “CIVCO has long been a leader, producing high-quality, precision medical products that are used by health care professionals around the world. But this new building represents something even greater: The future of Iowa’s science sector.”

Durham said the bioscience development field is a sector where the IEDA sees “incredible potential” for growth in jobs, advancement in technology and long-term global competitiveness.

“(CIVCO) strengthens the economic background of this region,” she said.

Caleb Wilson, the president of the Iowa City-based SouthGate Investment Properties team that built the new facility, said they “couldn’t have done this without the city.”

“This is more than just a building,” Wilson said. “It’s a continuation of a great partnership, a home for CIVCO’s next chapter and just a huge win for the community in general.”
