Iowa saw some showers throughout the week ahead of high temperatures resulting in heat advisories going into the weekend.
Since Friday, June 13, some areas in Iowa had as much as 4 inches of rain. While these showers have improved drought conditions in some areas of the state, multiple days of above 100 degree heat index values are forecasted through the weekend.
How much rain did Des Moines get?
Des Moines had 0.37 inches of rainfall over a 12-hour period ending at 9 a.m. June 20, according to the ISU Mesonet. The majority of the rain fell from 6 a.m. to 9 a.m., amounting to 0.28 inches in less than three hours.
Further north saw greater amounts of rainfall with Ankeny getting just over half an inch of rainfall in the same 12-hour period.

What is the Des Moines forecast for the weekend?
Friday’s showers were the last bit of rain Des Moines will see at least throughout the weekend. All of Iowa is under some kind of heat advisory, with western Iowa experiencing an extreme heat warning.
Des Moines is under a heat advisory, with temperatures expected to reach 94 degrees Friday, June 20. Temperatures should peak Saturday at 96 degrees but remain in the 90s until Monday, June 23, according to the National Weather Service. Heat index values could reach 105 to 110 degrees over the weekend.
