Former Iowa basketball forward lands G-League coaching gig

Coaching basketball runs in the McCaffery family’s blood. Fran McCaffery spent 15 seasons as the head coach of the Iowa men’s basketball team. And now his son, Connor, is taking a big step up in his coaching journey.

After his six seasons on the Hawkeye basketball team, Connor McCaffery spent the last two years as an assistant coach for Butler. With some coaching experience in the college ranks under his belt, he’s now moving up a level.

Scott Agness of Fieldhouse Files reported on Monday that McCaffery has accepted a coaching position with the Noblesville Boom, the Indiana Pacers’ G-League affiliate.

McCaffery will serve as a player development assistant with the Boom. He brings a ton of experience to the role, having played in 166 collegiate games at Iowa, making 89 starts. In his later years with the program, many of his teammates complimented his leadership on and off the court. All of that experience, plus getting to learn from his Dad, gives him a leg up to contribute meaningfully to the Boom right away.

It’s also a chance for McCaffery to be closer to former Iowa and current Indiana Fever star Caitlin Clark. The two have been dating for a few years and now will only be separated by a 40-minute drive.

McCaffery will start his role soon as he joins an organization looking to get back to the NBA Finals and stay competitive for the long run.
