Get to know Iowa basketball 2027 recruiting target Jack Kohnen

IOWA CITY — Iowa basketball is in the running for class of 2027 wing Jack Kohnen.

Kohnen, who attends Slinger High School in Wisconsin, is a four-star prospect and ranked 59th nationally in the 2027 high school class, according to the 247Sports Composite. He is 6-foot-6 and in the neighborhood of 215 pounds.

“One thing that’s pretty unique about Jack — it might be his best skill — he’s a really good passer,” said Slinger High School coach Alex Lavine. “So sometimes you play with star players who want to get theirs and stuff like that and that’s not Jack at all. He’s a great facilitator, a great passer.

“He’s 6-foot-6, but he runs point guard for us and does a nice job of facilitating and creating shots for other people, kind of drawing that attention. But also at the same time, when it’s needed, he has the ability to take over games and put the ball in the basket, as well. A three-level scorer, can score in the paint, but can also make perimeter shots at an efficient clip, too.”

Kohnen averaged 20.6 points, 11.1 rebounds, 4.7 assists and 1.4 blocks per game in his junior season at Slinger, all of which were team-highs. He shot 51.4% from the field, 33.1% from deep and 69.3% from the free throw line.

Slinger lost in the WIAA Division 2 state championship game and finished the season 25-5 overall.

“He can do everything,” Lavine said. “I think that’s what’s kind of unique about his skill set. Just really diverse. I don’t necessarily know how he fits at the next level, but I think that his versatility is intriguing to college coaches, at least that’s what I’ve heard. The ability to possibly handle the ball, the ability to play off the ball. He’s a really smart player. He doesn’t need the ball in his hands to be successful. But I think he does a really good job of getting other guys involved and making the right play.”

Kohnen’s list of offers includes Iowa, Iowa State and Nebraska. Kohnen plays for Team Herro on the Nike EYBL circuit. Miami Heat guard and Wisconsin native Tyler Herro serves as the CEO of the organization.

“Super easygoing,” Lavine said of Kohnen’s personality. “A little bit maybe like quiet, introverted, at least off the court. But on the court, he’s intense, competitive. He does a really good job of communicating with a poise and a discipline to him. He’s really smart. His basketball IQ is really high and he’s wise beyond his years, I would say, not only on the court, but just as a human. He’s a smart, high-character dude.”

Here are highlights of Kohnen from last year:

Iowa has also offered Kohnen’s younger brother, Joey, who is the top-ranked player in the state of Wisconsin’s 2028 class, according to the 247Sports Composite. Joey Kohnen averaged 15.7 points, four rebounds, 1.8 assists and 1.3 steals per game as a sophomore at Slinger.

The Hawkeyes currently don’t have any commitments in the 2027 high school class, but are at work on the recruiting trail. Outside of Jack Kohnen, here are some other names to know, along with their rating, according to the 247Sports Composite:

Jamison, a four-star point guard, is scheduled to visit Iowa in mid-June.
