Four open seats, five candidates. Find out who is running for Des Moines School Board

Five candidates will be running for four open seats on the Des Moines School Board this fall.

Districts 2 and District 4 each have one open seat, and there are two open at-large seats.

Board Chair Jackie Norris, at-large; and board member Jenna Knox, District 2; did not file to run by Thursday’s deadline. Earlier this year, Norris announced she is running for the U.S. Senate in 2026.

Here’s who will be on the Nov. 4 ballot.

District 2

Ryan P. Howell is running unopposed for the District 2 seat.

District 4

Skylar Mayberry-Mayes (incumbent) is running unopposed for the District 4 seat.

Mayberry-Mayes was appointed to the board in April 2024 to finish out Teree Caldwell-Johnson’s term after she stepped down due to poor health.

At-large seat

Three candidates are vying for the two open at-large seats.

Maria Alonzo (incumbent).

Marcus Coenen.
