Five candidates will be running for four open seats on the Des Moines School Board this fall.
Districts 2 and District 4 each have one open seat, and there are two open at-large seats.

Board Chair Jackie Norris, at-large; and board member Jenna Knox, District 2; did not file to run by Thursday’s deadline. Earlier this year, Norris announced she is running for the U.S. Senate in 2026.
Here’s who will be on the Nov. 4 ballot.
District 2
Ryan P. Howell is running unopposed for the District 2 seat.
District 4
Skylar Mayberry-Mayes (incumbent) is running unopposed for the District 4 seat.
Mayberry-Mayes was appointed to the board in April 2024 to finish out Teree Caldwell-Johnson’s term after she stepped down due to poor health.
At-large seat
Three candidates are vying for the two open at-large seats.
Maria Alonzo (incumbent).
Marcus Coenen.
