Former Iowa State standout Milan Momcilovic headed to Kentucky

Former Iowa State basketball standout Milan Momcilovic is taking his talents to Kentucky.

The 6-foot-8 sharpshooter announced on June 1 that he will be transferring to the Wildcats.

Momcilovic withdrew from the NBA Draft before the May 27, 10:59 p.m. CT deadline, which allowed him to maintain his college eligibility.

When he initially declared for the NBA Draft on April 12, he also simultaneously entered the transfer portal.

He also received reported interest from Louisville, St. John’s and Arizona.

Momcilovic was an All-Big 12 second team selection for the Cyclones last season, as the team finished 29-8 overall and reached the Sweet 16. Along the way, Iowa State defeated Kentucky in the second round of the NCAA Tournament, 82-63. Momcilovic had 20 points, shot 4-of-9 from 3-point range, and had five rebounds in the win.

Kentucky finished 22-14 overall last season, losing in the round of 32 in the NCAA Tournament.

During his junior campaign, Momcilovic led Iowa State with 16.9 points per game, while shooting 50.6% overall and a Division I-best 48.6% from 3-point range.

He also led the country with 136 made 3-pointers, which also surpassed an Iowa State single-season record. Momcilovic unseated Dedric Willoughby, who had 102 treys in the 1996-97 campaign, for the program record.

Through his freshman and sophomore years, Momcilovic had 124 combined 3-pointers.

A return to Iowa State was unlikely. The Cyclones appeared to move forward with their roster rebuild. They will have five incoming transfers for the 2026-27 season. The fifth transfer commit, Ryan Prather Jr., announced he was selecting Iowa State several hours after Momcilovic entered the transfer portal and declared for the NBA Draft.

There was speculation that with Jackson Kiss decommitting from Iowa State and flipping to UNLV, the Cyclones may have a vacant roster spot. But it appears the Cyclones will be moving forward with their current roster.

“We just take things as they come, it’d be reasonable to think that our roster is set and we stay where we’re at,” Otzelberger said on May 21. “But, you never want to say never. You just don’t know what could happen, so I’d say at this point, we’re looking at our roster like we have our team in place and we’re moving forward. We’re not looking at that as a position we need to fill, but at the same time, you just never know how things continue to evolve.”
