The Iowa quarterback room has seen plenty of players in and out of the program over the past few years.
While none of them have really worked out for the Hawkeyes, they’re still talented players. Some have gone on to have success at other schools across various levels of college football. And for one former Iowa QB, it’s been a long time coming.
Deuce Hogan was a three-star recruit in Iowa’s 2020 recruiting class. The 6-foot-4 gunslinger out of Grapevine, Texas, was the 441st-best prospect in the country and the 15th-best pro-style quarterback in the class. He chose the Hawkeyes over offers from Georgia, Baylor and Colorado among others.
The hype around Hogan was real, and many Hawkeye fans saw him as the next great Iowa quarterback, following in Nate Stanley’s footsteps. After redshirting his freshman year, Hogan appeared in one game during the 2021 season, completing his only pass attempt for two yards. After failing to gain ground in the quarterback battle with Spencer Petras and Alex Padilla, Hogan left the program before the 2022 season, transferring to Kentucky.
He appeared in three games as a Wildcat in 2022, going 6 of 7 for 19 yards in those games. He didn’t appear in a game in 2023 with Kentucky, causing the former Hawkeye to transfer again. This time he ended up at New Mexico State. Hogan played two games as an Aggie in 2024, going 6 of 18 for 31 yards and a pair of interceptions before getting hurt, ending his season prematurely.
Now, in 2025, as a graduate student, Hogan is at his fourth school. He transferred to Nicholls State, an Football Championship Subdivision team, and got the start in their season opener against Incarnate Word on Saturday. And he finally achieved some big career milestones.
In his first college start, Hogan went 21 of 36 for 221 yards and threw his first career touchdown en route to a 20-6 Nicholls State victory. It’s the first win for Hogan in his collegiate career. And it seems like he played well enough to continue starting games this season for Nicholls State.
While things didn’t pan out at Iowa for Hogan, it’s awesome to see his long and winding journey culminate with his first career touchdown pass and win.
