Finding our footing: Perry’s repair, recovery, and the small-town Iowa dream | Opinion

Perry embodies the Iowa spirit, its rural roots, and the ability to roll up our sleeves when faced with adversity. We value hard work, neighbors support each other, and community pride runs deep. We cherish our history, but we’re also forward-looking, eager to embrace opportunities that will help us grow so that our children and grandchildren can thrive in the future.

We’ve faced our share of challenges and have seen many small towns in Iowa and across the country experience the same. We’ve watched businesses come and go, companies that were once cornerstones of our economy shut their plant doors, leaving a large void in our community. We are very aware of the importance of adapting to a changing world, and the pain created by uncertainty. But through it all, Perry has persevered, thanks to the hard work, dedication, and resilience of our people. Because of our experience, we understand the need for sustainable growth and responsible partnerships.

As mayor, my focus is always on how we can build on our strengths and create new opportunities for our community. That means investing in our infrastructure, supporting our local businesses, and attracting new families to Perry. It also means carefully considering opportunities for economic development that can bring new jobs and expand our tax base, creating a more stable and prosperous future.

One such opportunity is currently under review: a potential investment from JBS USA, a leading food company. This proposal includes an intended initial investment of $135 million for a new sausage facility and the creation of 250 high-paying jobs locally, 2,000 overall across America. This isn’t simply another business coming to town; it’s a significant commitment that could represent a new chapter for Perry. We understand that any project of this scale requires careful consideration, and we are committed to a thorough and transparent review process. Given past experiences with food companies, we want to ensure that this potential partnership with JBS USA is a healthy one, built on mutual respect and a shared commitment to our community’s long-term well-being.

We will evaluate the impact of the project, as well as its effect on our local infrastructure. We will also be seeking input from our residents throughout the process, to ensure that their voices are heard and their concerns are addressed. Our priority is to ensure that any new development benefits our entire community.

We are particularly focused on ensuring that any new business integrates into the fabric of Perry. This means prioritizing local hiring, supporting workforce training programs, and fostering a strong sense of community engagement. We believe that businesses have a responsibility to be good neighbors, and we will be holding any potential partners accountable to that standard. JBS USA’s track record in investing in other rural communities, like Ottumwa and Marshalltown, is strong. It provides a snapshot of how they can contribute to a stronger, more vibrant Perry in the future.

After careful consideration, I am supportive of this opportunity for Perry. The decision to move forward will ultimately be made by the Perry City Council, and I believe they will come to the same conclusion I have.

Perry is a community with a heart and heritage. We are a community that will not give up on each other. We’re a town that’s proud of its past, but we’re also excited to pave a path for the future. While the growth and change does not come without challenges, I’m confident that together we are building a brighter future for Perry. We are becoming an example of success and vitality for small towns across Iowa by embracing new opportunities. We just need to find our footing, and start moving forward, together.
