Faustinos Taqueria, the Beaverdale Mexican restaurant, opened a new location in West Des Moines but, unlike the original Franklin Avenue spot which is known for its all-day tacos, the new outpost puts breakfast front and center.
Until 2:30 p.m., the new West Des Moines location offers a Mexican breakfast menu of omelets stuffed with fajitas, birria, or carnitas; chilaquiles; and breakfast tacos.
After that, the kitchen shifts gears, offering tacos and other signature dishes for a late lunch or dinner.
The new restaurant’s design echoes the original, with playful wall art and a family-friendly vibe.
“The same people that painted over there, painted over here,” said Sky Faustino, who helps run the business alongside her husband, Asael Faustino, and his brother, Jose Faustino. She referred to the murals at the Beaverdale location with its Mexican phrases that replace movie and TV show names. In West Des Moines, find cheeky references to “mild is for quitters” about salsa, “birria, juicier than group chat gossip,” and “Churrasic Park.”
What’s on the menu at Faustinos Breakfast & Tacos?
Faustinos offers a diverse menu of Mexican breakfast and lunch favorites, with a focus on bold flavors and customizable options.
For breakfast, Sky Faustino recommends the trio of pancakes with bananas, blueberries, and strawberries, featuring a creamy filling, as well as the crepes, which come in flavors such as strawberry, banana, or blueberry, served with Nutella. The breakfast tacos have also been a huge hit.
Other highlights include chilaquiles con chorizo with crispy tortilla strips simmered in salsa, topped with eggs and spicy sausage; huevos rancheros with eggs over corn tortillas with ranchero sauce; and breakfast burritos stuffed with eggs, cheese, potatoes, and your choice of meat.
For lunch and dinner, the restaurant offers its signature line of tacos, including taco de tinga de pollo with shredded chicken in chipotle sauce, taco de asada with grilled steak, nopal tacos with cactus, and birria de res con consomé with slow-cooked beef with dipping broth.
This location also offers alambres, a sizzling mix of grilled meats, peppers, onions, and cheese served with tortillas that are perfect for sharing or building your own tacos. “We don’t have those at Franklin,” Sky Faustino noted.
Birria pizza, tortas, and sopes, along with esquites (street corn), queso dip, and a rotating selection of aguas frescas in flavors such as horchata, cucumber mint, and hibiscus, are also on the menu.
The restaurant takes over the former Terra Brazil location in Clocktower Square in West Des Moines.
