The national average for diesel has reached $4.264 per gallon, the highest level since Nov. 21, 2023. A week ago, diesel averaged $3.752 per gallon, marking a 51.2-cent jump in just one week — one of the most dramatic weekly increases seen in years, wrote Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy.

Why are gas and diesel prices up?

Iran said it has closed the Strait of Hormuz, which is used by more than 3,000 ships every month. The narrow band of water is a crucial Middle Eastern export route that carries 20% of global oil, resulting in a halt of petroleum shipments and a surge in oil prices.Gas prices have been steadily going up since the United States and Israel began strikes against Iran on Feb. 28.

The longer the strait remains closed, the longer it will take to recover from the supply chain disruption, De Haan wrote.
