Saydel girls wrestler Colbie Tenborg and West Des Moines Valley boys swimmer Will Van Zee were voted the Des Moines Register’s Athlete of the Week winners from the Des Moines metro area for the week of Feb. 1-7.
Tenborg dominated female Athlete of the Week voting by earning 76% of the vote
She won her third state championship as the lone girls wrestler from the metro area to place first during Class 1A competition at the IGHSAU state wrestling tournament.
Tenborg placed first at 140 to cap a 29-2 season. She won her first three matches at the tournament by fall and then defeated Logan-Magnolia-Woodbine’s Teagan Carritt by a 9-3 decision in the finals.
Van Zee won male Athlete of the Week with 74% of the vote.
He placed first in both the 200 and 500-yard freestyle races for the West Des Moines Valley swimming team during the district swimming meet in Mason City on Feb. 7.
Van Zee won the 200 freestyle in one minute, 42.12 seconds, and he touched the wall in 4:30.44 during the 500 freestyle. He qualified for the state meet in both events.
