Clock hits Midnight: Fans react as Iowa basketball's dream season ends

Iowa staved it off for as long as they could, but the clock officially hit Midnight on Saturday night.

The Hawkeyes’ magical Cinderella run in the NCAA Tournament came to an end with a 71-59 loss to Illinois in the Elite Eight. After racing out to a 10-point lead, Iowa could never pull away, and the game turned into a tight back-and-forth affair. In the final six minutes, the Hawkeyes went cold and couldn’t secure rebounds, a theme of the game, as the Illini pulled away.

It was a tough end to what was a dream postseason run for Ben McCollum’s team. No one expected Iowa to make it past the first weekend, much less make an Elite Eight run. While it stings in the moment, there’s so much to be proud of for what this team accomplished. That seemed to be the sentiment on social media as well, as fans and media members reacted to the Hawkeyes’ season coming to an end.
