In a recent appearance on “The Rush With Travis and Ross” podcast, five-star Iowa women’s basketball signee McKenna Woliczko revealed that numerous Hawkeyes legends, including Caitlin Clark, made their presence known in her recruitment process and eagerly inquired with head coach Jan Jensen about the Hawkeyes’ pursuit of the talented San Bruno, Calif, native.
When asked by co-host Travis Justice if Clark had ever contacted Woliczko in an attempt to lure her to Iowa, the 6-foot-2 forward stated that she never got a text or call from the 2024 WNBA No. 1 overall pick, but did receive comments from her Instagram posts and was aware the Indiana Fever star was interested in recruiting updates from Jensen as well.
“She never called me,” Woliczko said. “She did comment on my Instagram posts and I was aware that she was reaching out to Coach Jensen about how my recruitment was going and she was asking and wanting to stay updated.”
Woliczko continued by mentioning that she did receive texts from Golden State Valkyries guard Kate Martin and Las Vegas Aces’ center Megan Gustafson, but did not elaborate on whether the former Hawkeyes attempted to lure her to Iowa in any way.
“I did get texts from like Kate Martin and Megan Gustafson, so I did get some people.”
Justice followed up by asking what type of player she envisions herself being at Iowa and which position she might fill in Jensen’s system next fall.
“I’m kind of going into it like how I was going into (Archbishop) Mitty. I’m just going in with no expectations. I’m willing to learn under Coach Jensen and see and do whatever she wants me to do,” Woliczko answered.
“Obviously, as you’re saying, in high school I’m more of a post, but in college I’m going to be too small to do that.
“I think what helps me be kind of that positionless player is because I’m so tall and know how to do post moves, I can post up someone that’s smaller guarding than me, but if there’s somebody tall guarding me, then I can be quicker than them and be more like that wing player. So that’s where the positionless comes in.”
Before moving to a different topic with Wolizczo, Justice asked if she is going to Iowa with her sights set on bringing a national championship to Iowa City during her four-year tenure.
“I’d say obviously the goal is to win a national championship,” Woliczko said.
Woliczko is ranked as the nation’s No. 6 player by ESPN, Rivals, and 247Sports. According to 247Sports, she is the country’s No. 2 power forward and the No. 2 player from California.
After officially signing with Iowa on Nov. 12, the already talented Hawkeyes program is now set up for astronomical success for years to come, as Woliczko will be joining a youngful and blossoming core next fall.
Adding to the excitement around Woliczko, she is head coach Jan Jensen’s highest-ranked recruit in the head coaching tenure. She is also Iowa’s highest-ranked signee since Caitlin Clark, who ESPN ranked as the No. 4 overall recruit and No. 2 point guard in the 2020 recruiting class.
