Ames Main Street Farmers Market returns Saturday. What to know:

The Ames Main Street Farmers’ Market is launching its 16th season, anchored by a larger footprint and a busy opening month.

With opening day set for 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., Saturday, May 2, organizers say the market will now stretch into the 200 block of Main Street, a change driven by record attendance and a long vendor waiting list.

In 2025, the market drew more than 8,000 visitors on a single Saturday. This year’s expansion will allow about 95 vendors to participate each week, giving shoppers more space to move through downtown.

“The Ames Main Street Farmers’ Market has grown into one of the most popular gatherings in our community,” market manager Lojean Petersen said in a news release. “Expanding into the 200 block allows us to welcome more vendors and create an even better experience for the thousands of people who come downtown on Saturday mornings.”

A boost for downtown Ames and local producers

The market is an affiliate program of the Ames Regional Economic Alliance, which supports economic vitality and quality of life across the region. Alliance president and CEO, Dan Culhane, said the market’s growth highlights the strength of local producers and the value of vibrant public spaces.

“(It) reflects the strength of our local producers, the enthusiasm of our community, and the important role that vibrant public spaces play in supporting local business and regional economic development,” Culhane said.

What’s new in May at the Ames Farmers Market?

Opening day will feature free activities from the Iowa League of Heroes, with appearances by the Dark Knight, Spiderman, and the Batcar from 10 a.m. until noon. Saturday’s music will be provided by Jake Doty.

Throughout May, the market will also host a sourdough bread contest, a petting zoo, pony rides, face painting, the Ames Public Library Bookmobile, and the West Homesteads Healing Herd.
