What's being built on Albany Street in Beech Grove?

There’s construction in Beech Grove just north of Main Street where a former Safeway grocery store once sat. At 1815 Albany St. at the corner of 18th Street, a large structure is slowly but surely nearing completion.

What’s being built there?

The answer: A plumbing training program anticipated to open by the end of 2026.

Mechanical Skills LLC purchased the property in January 2025 for $1.3 million, according to county property records, and subsequently began work on the construction site to build a brand-new building.

When the building opens later this year, Mechanical Skills will use the facility for its Plumbing Apprenticeship School program, a four-year training curriculum touted by the company as one of the top in the country. Currently, Mechanical Skills offers classes at its property on the east side of Indianapolis at 3535 E. Michigan St. but plans to relocate operations to Beech Grove.

In Indiana, plumbers must complete an apprenticeship program to become licensed to work the trade.
