Through the years, the IndyStar staff has written articles that have not only been recognized by the local community but have also gained national attention by winning prestigious awards for journalism that pushed beyond state lines.

1975:  The Star wins a Pulitzer Prize for its 1974 series on police corruption, reported and written by journalists Dick Cady, Harley Bierce and Bill Anderson.

1991: The Star wins the Pulitzer Prize for a series on medical malpractice. In the newsroom, champagne is poured over the heads of triumphant reporters Joe Hallinan and Susan Headden.

The Star has not only won Pulitzer prizes for its outstanding investigative and national reporting, but has also won multiple Indiana SPJ Story of the Year and first-place awards for investigative and breaking news reporting in 2022, 2023, and 2024, and EPPY and IRE Awards for its 2020 nursing home investigation. The IndyStar sports department consistently earns national recognition, including a coveted APSE triple crown in 2024 and 2025, placing it among the nation’s top sports sections.
