A plethora of choices of what to do this weekend in Bloomington may make it difficult to decide how you’re going to spend your time. Here are some of the options you should consider.
Puzzles and pizza at the library
Join in from 1-2 p.m. Thursday, June 4, for Piecing it Together: Puzzles and Pizza at the Southwest Branch of the Monroe County Public Library, 890 W. Gordan Pike.
Besides putting together puzzles, participants will talk about how our community fits together, including community organizations and resources. Mother Hubbard’s Cupboard staff and volunteers will participate. Bring a puzzle of your own if you’d like to put it together with others. Pizza and additional puzzles will be provided for people age 18 and older. Register beforehand at https://calendar.mcpl.info/event/15899611.
Free event about U.S. freedom at The Bishop
A staged reading of the Tony Award-winning musical “1776” will be shown at 9 p.m. Thursday, June 4, and Friday, June 5, at The Bishop Bar, 123 S. Walnut St. “1776” offers a close-up look at the days leading up to the writing and signing of the Declaration of Independence with the musical about the independent-minded men who wrote the United States into existence. The cabaret-style production is presented by Granfalloon and Indiana University Musical Theatre. The 18-plus events are free.
Summer’s Bloomington Handmade Market on the courthouse square
More than 100 artists from across the Midwest will sell ceramics, jewelry, leatherwork, woodwork, paintings and more at the Bloomington Handmade Market, 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday, June 6, on the Monroe County Courthouse Square as well as portions of Kirkwood Avenue and Sixth Street. The event — the city’s biggest indie craft show — will be held, rain or shine.
Admission is free; metered street parking is available and there are nearby garages for parking. The first 50 people at the Bloomington Handmade Market booth will receive a free swag bag, screen-printed locally with an original design and filled with goodies from sponsors and vendors. Get out and hike on National Trails Day
June 6 is American Hiking Society’s National Trails Day and the Hoosier National Forest has several events to celebrate. Whether you’re cleaning up public lands, volunteering for trail maintenance or enjoying the great outdoors, your efforts make a lasting impact.
Some of the closer events include a guided bird hikes at Pioneer Mothers Memorial Forest, which has a parking area on Ind. 37 south of Paoli. (GPS coordinates: 38.534285, -86.457849). Wear comfortable shoes and bring water and binoculars. The hikes, which are 2.4 miles round trip, will be 10-11 a.m. and 2-3 p.m. For more, call 812-276-5987.
Free fishing on Saturday, Sunday
The Indiana Department of Natural Resources’ free fishing days will be June 6-7. That means Indiana residents may fish public waters without a fishing license or trout/salmon stamp. The purpose is to encourage participation in fishing while providing an easy, low-barrier way for people and families to enjoy some of the state’s natural resources.
So whether you’re a seasoned angler or a first-time fisher, it’s a great way to try some different locations. Please note: While fishing license requirements are waived for residents during these designated days, all other state fishing regulations remain in effect, including bag limits, size restrictions and seasonal rules.
‘The Land Before Time’ shown Monday
The Monroe County Public Library’s Family Movie Night at the downtown library will be 5-6:15 p.m. Monday, June 8. All ages are invited to watch the 1988 film of “The Land Before Time” at 303 E. Kirkwood Ave.
