RICHMOND, Ind. — A Wayne County man is accused of ingesting drugs before causing a traffic accident that seriously injured a motorcyclist.
Peyton A. Sparks, 25, of Centerville, is charged in Wayne Superior Court 3 with causing serious bodily injury when operating with a controlled substance in system, a Level 5 felony carrying up to six years in prison.
According to an affidavit, blood tests showed Sparks had Alprazolam, also known as Xanax, and Oxycodone, a narcotic pain medication, in his system when he was involved in a collision on Sept. 12.
Wayne County sheriff’s deputies reported Sparks was driving a Honda passenger vehicle in the 5000 block of West U.S. 40 when he crossed the center line and struck a motorcycle.
That collision caused the motorcycle to be struck by another motorcycle, according to the court document. The operator of a third motorcycle told deputies he “swerved to avoid the accident” and went into a ditch.
The most seriously injured of the motorcyclists was taken by ambulance to Reid Hospital and was later flown by medical helicopter to Miami Valley Hospital in Dayton, Ohio.
His injuries included four severed toes on his left foot, a spinal fracture, a broken left hand and a broken left foot, the affidavit said.
Deputies reported Sparks stopped on Eliason Road after the collision.
A witness said the Centerville man threw a box labeled “Premium Psilocybin Chocolate Bars” into a nearby field.
Sparks is also charged with leaving the scene of an accident, a Level 6 felony carrying up to 30 months in prison, and driving while intoxicated, a misdemeanor.
An initial hearing in the case is set for March 20. Court records reflect no prior charges against Sparks.
