VOTE for the IU Health Herald-Times Athlete of the Week for Jan. 5-10

Welcome to the IU Health Herald-Times Athlete of the Week poll for Jan. 5-10.

Congratulations to last week’s winner, Owen Valley boys wrestler Riley Martin, who received 38.2% of the vote (5,176) to edge out Patriot girls wrestler Kyra Newby (35.9%).

As always, readers can vote as much as they like in this poll until it closes at noon on Thursday, Jan. 15. Here is a look at this week’s nominees with the poll at the bottom of the story:

Landon Brinkerhoff, Seven Oaks boys basketball

Sophomore helped Seven Oaks secure it’s first victory of the season after an 0-8 start, grabbing six offensive rebounds and getting a steal in a 56-44 win over Cannelton.

Macy Bush, Seven Oaks girls basketball

Senior led the Firehawks to a record of 1-1 last week. She had 20 points, seven rebounds and four assists to lead Seven Oaks (5-7) past Phalen Leadership Academy 49-21 to bounce back from a loss to Mooresville Christian.

Wyatt Cooksey, South boys wrestling

Senior, ranked 11th in the state, had a 4-0 week all against top-30 foes at 157 pounds. Pinned No. 21 Riley Martin of Owen Valley in a dial, then had a pin of No. 23 in 3:23, a 2-1 win over No. 19 and a 14-2 major against No. 16 as the Panthers beat Floyd Central and Columbus East and lost to Franklin in the Class 3A Team State Tournament.

Edgewood swimming medley relays

Both girls and boys squads broke their respective school records in a dual against Terre Haute South. Jillian Cowden, Maggie McCormack, Ellie Vagedes and Maya Gill went 1:57.04, then Sam Kohne, Hudson Scholl, Jackson Schmalensee and Ryder Colford went 1:45.85. The boys record was 31 years old.

Lulu Frank, North girls basketball

Sophomore had two big games, scoring 16 points as the Cougars (9-8) downed New Palestine, 60-47. Then, she came up huge in a 39-38 Conference Indiana win at Terre Haute South, hitting three 3s and scoring 12 of her 17 points as North rallied from down 23-19 in the fourth quarter.

Lincoln Getts, Edgewood boys wrestling

Junior at 285 pounds came up with a pin in 26 seconds in the next to last match as the Mustangs added a forfeit to rally from down 11 to top Martinsville 39-38 for their first team dual win of the season.

Bre Hash, Eastern Greene girls basketball

Sophomore helped the T-Birds snap a five-game losing streak with 21 points and 15 rebounds in a 51-20 win over Shoals.

Jaclyn Hillenburg, South girls wrestling

Senior came into the Bloomington South Regional off a serious injury from the week before and trailed 13-0 in the second period of her ticket round match at 235 pounds and came up with a pin to save her season and earn her first trip to state.

Trae Hopkins, North boys wrestling

One of six Cougars to win titles, taking first at 144 pounds at the Old Capital City Classic at Corydon Central to lead North to a second-place team finish. He was named the meet’s Outstanding Wrestler after posting three pins, the last of just 16 seconds in the title bout.

Braddock Nickless, Owen Valley boys wrestling

Junior at 215 was 4-0 with four pins against foes from Jay County, Bellmont, Delta and Griffith as the Patriots took eighth in the Class 2A Team State Tournament.

Coby Sykes, Eastern Greene boys basketball

Junior had 14 points, going 10-of-10 at the line, with six rebounds and seven assists in a big 54-44 SWIAC win over North Daviess, their first over the Cougars since 2017-18. He followed with 13 points and five boards in a 56-43 loss to 1A No. 8 Orleans.

Heath Weaver, Seven Oaks boys wrestling 

Senior in his first year in the sport recorded his first pin of the season at the Indiana School for the Deaf Orioles Invite. After a long day of wrestling he had a comeback win to pin his opponent in his last match of the day and secure the Firehawks a seventh place finish.  

Aleah Winders, Lighthouse Christian girls basketball

Had 18 points as the Lions (7-6) knocked off Bethesda Christian on the road, 51-47. Then had 16 points in a Senior Night win over Irvington Prep.
