There were several standout individual performances across Southwestern Indiana this past week. Who gets your vote?
Each week, you can vote for the Courier & Press Athlete of the Week, presented by Orthopaedic Associates. Below you will find the poll for June 2-6 and brief information on each performance. You can vote as often as you’d like until 10 a.m. CT Friday morning.
Gunner Alexander, Gibson Southern baseball: The senior was 3-for-4 with two doubles and four RBIs in a regional championship win over Memorial.
Cole Breeden, Mater Dei baseball: The sophomore allowed only three hits and struck out nine in a complete-game regional championship win against Salem.
Bri Canaan, Memorial softball: The junior allowed only three earned runs and struck out 19 batters across 21 innings in three postseason games.
Alex Cook, Castle golf: The freshman was the individual sectional champion at Helfrich with a bogey-free, five-under 66.
Xander Fleig, Forest Park golf: The senior was the individual sectional champion at Sultan’s Run, winning a playoff after shooting one-over 73. The Rangers won their first team title in program history.
Emery Folz, Memorial tennis: The sophomore won twice at No. 2 singles in the state finals and earned the decisive point against Jasper to send the Tigers to the championship match.
Lily Greenwell, Castle softball: The senior was 3-for-4 with a double, three RBIs and a walk-off home run to beat Seymour in the regional championship.
JJ Knepp, Barr-Reeve softball: The freshman was 5-for-7 with six runs and three RBIs in three postseason victories. She hit a home run in both semi-state games for the Vikings.
Jasper No. 1 doubles tennis: Stella Knies and Adaysha Smiley remained undefeated in the state tournament with straight-set victories against Fort Wayne Carroll and Memorial.
De’Janay Layne, North track & field: The senior was the state champion in the 200 meters at 24.30 seconds and finished second in the 100 at 12.12 seconds.
Ty Pohl, North baseball: The sophomore earned his second postseason victory with 3 1/3 scoreless innings and five strikeouts in relief during a regional championship victory over Jeffersonville.
Audrey Seiler, Tecumseh softball: The sophomore continued a dominant postseason with 15 scoreless innings and 33 strikeouts in three victories, including no-hitters against Sullivan and Eastern Hancock.
Carter Zieren, Reitz track & field: The junior finished third in the 1,600 (4:06.86) and fourth in the 3,200 (8:59.34) at the state championship.
