The Indianapolis Colts now have six training camp practices under their belts. So given what we have learned, what does the offensive depth chart currently look like?
There is still time for players to make a push for playing time or a roster spot with several weeks of practices and three preseason games remaining. However, one week in, things are taking shape as well within each position group.
Here is where we believe things stand for the offense.
Quarterback
Leonard and Richardson are competing for the backup role. Kevin Bowen of 107.5 The Fan wrote recently that he believes Leonard has the “slight” edge.
Running back
Giddens and McGowan are competing for the backup running back role, but we know those two, along with Taylor, will make up the Colts’ running back room. McGowan seems to be making a real push for RB2.
Wide receiver
There is still a lot to figure out at this position group. The WR3 role is up for grabs, and while Dulin seemed to be the clear favorite entering training camp, that gap has narrowed. Bowen mentions that Westbrook-Ikhine and Treadwell have made more plays in training camp. But it’s not only the WR3 position that the Colts have to figure out, but the fourth, fifth, and sixth spots on the depth chart are also up for grabs.
Tight end
Mallory was on the 53-man roster last year and offers a different skill set than McKeon as a pass-catching option. McKeon has often been a blocking-first tight end, which the Colts already have in Alie-Cox and Ogletree. Perhaps the question here for me is whether Mallory can show enough to earn the fourth tight end spot, or could the Colts roster just three?
Offensive line
The depth behind the starters seems to be shaking out here in the early going. Tenuta and Freeland appear to be the top tackle options off the bench, while Tucker and Morrissey are competing for the backup center role — although that’s had its ups and downs.
