Tornado warning canceled, but storm warning remains for parts of Indiana

Indianapolis, Fishers and Noblesville were under a tornado warning briefly on the evening of April 24, but the National Weather Service canceled the advisory at 5 p.m.

Greg Melo, a meteorologist with NWS, said the weather service had no confirmation of a tornado at the time of the warning’s cancellation.

Tornado warnings have been issued for New Castle, Shirley and Kennard until 6:15 p.m. Marion County’s severe thunderstorm warning lapsed at 5:30 p.m., but portions of Madison, Hancock, Randolph, Delaware and Henry County remained under warning until 6:30 p.m.

“The storm has weakened and is expected to continue weakening,” Melo said.

Though brief, the storm had a significant impact: At 5:40 p.m., AES reported that more than 11,000 customers were without power, mostly in a northeast line across Indianapolis from Mooresville to Lawrence.

Duke Energy, which covers several of the suburbs around Indianapolis, was showing more than 600 customers without power, mostly in the Plainfield area.

The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department is aware of at least two traffic hazards caused by downed trees or limbs, according to a social media post. Crews are working to clear the hazards, the department said.

The Indianapolis International Airport appears largely unaffected by the storms, according to flightaware.com, a website that tracks delays and cancellations. Total delays at the airport were sitting at 54 with zero cancellations just after the storm passed.

Showers are possible into the evening, Melo said, but overnight weather will likely be clear. An isolated overnight shower can’t be ruled out, Melo said.
